Embedding Secure Product Authentication Under Ceramic Glaze

Baking Authentication into Ceramics

A new, durable integration method allows O-KEYs to be embedded beneath the surface, preserving appearance while enabling authentication.

PUFIN-ID has developed a method to embed O-KEYs directly beneath the glaze of ceramic products. This integration offers secure, durable, and non-intrusive product authentication that survives the firing process.

This advancement makes it possible to integrate unique digital identifiers into glazed ceramics without visible tags or surface disruption, expanding O-KEY's applicability to new materials and production environments.

Addressing Material-Specific Constraints

Securing ceramics has always presented practical limitations. Adhesive labels can fail under heat, wear, or moisture. Printing on glazed surfaces risks inconsistency or visibility. For industries dealing with high-value or regulated ceramic goods such as luxury tableware, healthcare instruments, or industrial components. These constraints limit serialization and traceability options.

The challenge was to develop a solution that:

  • Survives high-temperature firing
  • Maintains surface aesthetics and performance
  • Supports secure, unique identification
  • Integrates into standard ceramic production processes

PUFIN-ID adapted its O-KEY technology to function under ceramic glaze by embedding unclonable patterns of metallic particles prior to glazing and firing. These particles form a random pattern, a type of physical fingerprint, that remains scannable post-firing using optical recognition.

Key characteristics:

  • Embedded before glaze application
  • Protected under the final surface layer
  • Scannable with standard smartphone cameras
  • Compatible with O-KEY's authentication and data linking platform

Each embedded O-KEY is registered and linked to product-specific data in PUFIN-ID’s backend system using AI-based image analysis. Once scanned, the O-KEY enables authentication and access to linked digital records.

Built for Traceability, Verification, and Compliance

This method is relevant in contexts where:

  • Product design cannot accommodate visible labels or surface treatments
  • Products must withstand harsh environments, frequent handling, or cleaning
  • Secure traceability or verification is required throughout the lifecycle
  • There is a need for durable integration without additional components

Examples include:

  • Authenticating collectible or high-value ceramics
  • Tracking production batches for regulated goods
  • Preventing unauthorized resale or substitution
  • Linking products to service records, warranty data, or compliance info

The ceramic-embedded O-KEY follows the same backend processes as standard labels or surface-printed O-KEYs. It can be deployed alongside other forms of O-KEY integration within a single platform, and connected to existing ERP, PLM, or CRM systems via API.
